Wild Horse's part 9

Visiting time soon arrived and all three of them sat anxiously waiting. Jess’s friend Sarah walked into the room pushing a buggy and paused when she saw jack and Jane. “Mr and Mrs Granger, it’s great to see you again” Sarah said awkwardly. “It’s ok Sarah I told them everything” jess told her friend. Looking at the baby in front of them Jane began to cry tears of joy. “Oh jess he is beautiful” she crooned “can i…” she started to ask “of course mum” jess replied giving her consent to pick up her grandson for the first time. Sarah excused herself from the family reunion and went down stairs to get a coffee. Jane sat down cuddling baby jack not wanting to put him down. Jess sat talking with her father. “I’m sorry I just left dad but I had to get away” she apologised to him. He gently hugged her. “I understand and now we just want you both to come home where you belong” he told her. “I’m packed and ready to go but apparently my car is a right off” she told him. “Don’t worry about that I will get it all sorted” he sat back down but kept hold of her hand.

That night jack and Jane stayed at Sarah’s with baby jack, they packed all of jess’s things into their jeep ready to take her home as soon as the doctor would allow it.

Trying to drive easy jack worried about his daughters comfort but she never complained. She sat in her own darkness next to her child worrying about how to tell nick. She had no problems letting him into their son’s life but that also meant letting him in to her life, and right now she felt vulnerable and her defences would be on red alert.

It was night when they arrived back home and all was quiet on the ranch as they went inside. Jane carried baby jack while jess was helped inside by her father. Once he got her to her room he went back out to the car and brought in all of the bags and set up the crib for jack to sleep in but the rest would wait till morning. It took jess a while to fall asleep knowing jack was so close. She didn’t really mind as long as he didn’t take things out on their son. He deserved so much better.

Waking up to the early morning sounds of the ranch jess fumbled her way to check on jack then when she found him sleeping she made her way to the bathroom. Crashing into a side table she caught the attention of her mother in the kitchen. “Jess are you alright” Jane asked when she saw her daughter getting up off the floor. “Yeah I’m fine. It’s just going to take a while to get the hang of this” she replied. Jane took her arm and escorted her to the bathroom then helped her to get dressed. Once jack was awake fed and changed jess sat down to breakfast. “Is dad already out working” she asked. “Yes we got a mother and foal the other day so he will be busy with them most of the day” Jane told her as she set a plate of bacon and eggs in front of jess. “I only filled your coffee half way I hope that’s alright” she said as she went to the fridge. “That’s fine mum. Thanks” jess replied. “Oh” Jane said out loud. “I need to go into town for a few things” she told her daughter. “It’s ok mum go I will be fine. Why don’t you take jack with you and I can rest” jess told her knowing her mum would only worry about them both and also worried about being alone with her son in case she messed up. “Are you sure” Jane asked. “Yes mum it will be good for you to spend some quality granny time with him” jess explained. Jane went over to where jack lay in his cradle “what do you jack do you want to come with grandma” she cooed to him, making jess smile. “Mum can you get me some snack food and more diapers please” jess added. “Sure not a problem” Jane replied as she picked up her grandson.
