Crimson watched as his final few arrived, he lingered back giving them space whilst he rested and savoured all he had devoured before his next task was due. Every taste brought new pleasure to him giving him more strength than he had ever known. He learned of the human race and its past, its misconceptions about their history and the history of the planet. He learnt of their fears in their final moments of life, he learnt of things such as love and hate, passion and depression. He enjoyed all of it, he was thought of as the devil, as a demon and some thought he was god. How wrong they were, he was Crimson a powerful life force created in substance with the birth of the planet he was here when it began and he would be here when it came to an end. This was his planet, his domain it was his home. Rushing outside jack and martin and Kate left Pamela to watch the children. Outside in front of the hospital the bus pulled to a stop when the driver a man in his late fifties with rosy cheeks saw them running out of the ambulance bay. Getting off the bus he and a few others greeted jack, martin and Kate. “Well aren’t you a sight for sore eyes” the driver said taking off his sunglasses. The driver introduced himself as bobby Harper and the others that got off the bus were Sarah Montgomery, Clive Haskings and Tara fields. The mist was staying back so they decided to spend the night in the hospital. Back on the second floor everyone settled in and they all sat in one of the larger wards and began swapping stories. Jack went first telling them that he was a detective from Chicago and went on with
his story, then it was martins turn who was a retired engineer then it was Pamela a stay at home
mother who also told molly’s story. Kate went next then it was the others turn. Bobby told his story to jack and the others. He was a school bus driver and had been asked to drive the Saturday club kids to the pool in Washington. It was early and he was driving to the school to
pick up the kids and one of the teachers who was to escort them. It was a beautiful morning until a blanket of red fog drifted across the road. Cars crashed and swerved to avoid crashing which
resulted in them crashing in to barriers and other traffic, people were screaming. Everything was
hidden from sight and unable to drive bobby had stopped he sat still watching, listening and waiting, the screaming went on for what seemed like forever but in reality it was only a minute. When all was silent apart from the noises from the crashed cars the mist cleared and there was not a soul in sight. Once the mist had retreated bobby got out of the bus and went to search the cars. He found no one in the cars and no one in the surrounding area. Bobby had continued on to the school and found no one, but the mist. He didn’t want to go into it again and drove away from it which took him into Virginia, where he met up with Sarah and Lethanial. They had come from New York and Philadelphia, trying to avoid the mist they had crashed their car into a pickup truck and were wandering around searching for another car that hadn’t crashed and still worked.
Clive Haskings was next, he came from North Carolina and he was a carpenter with his own business. He had black hair and one of those cocky broad smiles. He had been out mowing the lawn when the mist struck it had taken his wife and his three kids. Bobby, Sarah and Lethaniel had found him collecting food from a store when they too had stopped for food. In South Carolina Tara had been taking her toddler and older child to the park. As it was Saturday it was her day off from teaching. She enjoyed her Saturdays with her kids, watching them play and having fun. The red haze has covered the park and she held on to her kids as tight as she could. It didn’t matter how tight the hold she had on them it wasn’t enough. They were not pulled from her
arms it was more like they just evaporated. When the mist moved and cleared the park her kids
were nowhere to be seen. She searched frantically but they were gone. She returned home to her husband but he too was gone, she was alone. When the mist returned it brought the school bus and she joined them on their journey. In Georgia two girls were found, a 14 year old and a four year old.The elder girl was called Jessica and she had been babysitting Tanisha the younger girl. They were playing in the front garden and saw the mist take the other people in the street. Jessica a pretty blonde with her hair in a plait had put Tanisha, with her olive coloured skin and hair in bunches into a push chair and they had gone in search of people and even went to the police station. They had been picked up by bobby and the others in a mall parking lot. Along the journey Tara had picked up a note book and had been writing down the stories from everyone trying to make some sense of it all. So far it all sounded like something out of a sci-fi movie. She had also been writing down the dreams they had all been having. The next day the bus had arrived in Miami and had found jack and the others. They too had had the same dreams when they slept, identical down to the last detail. They sat and ate a meal together consisting of bacon and beans and chips, all made on the gas stove that Kate had set up. When the children were asleep the adults left the room and found a room they could talk in without waking the kids. Everyone seemed to look to jack to take the lead, probably because he was the detective. “What do we do now, we have run out of road to go anywhere” asked Tara. Jack thought for a minute then told them his idea. “Tomorrow we go to the marina and find a large boat to fit us all then we stock it with everything we can” he began. “Can the mist not follow us onto the water” asked bobby. “It probably can but we have nowhere else to go” jack explained. Once they all agreed in the course of action they began making lists of things they will need and assigning tasks to each person. That night they all dreamed of crimson again.
