Miami was as deserted as everywhere else, it was late afternoon and mist was still behind them but had backed off a bit and was just watching them. Pamela suggested they stop at the hospital up ahead as the first aid kits didn’t have much in them and if they needed more than plasters and antiseptic cream. Agreeing it was a good idea jack pulled into the ambulance bay. Jack looked around and told them he would find them inside he was just going to get some stuff. Pamela took molly in with her and martin followed. Jack walked off down the street. Inside the emergency room they began to search for antibiotics and other medications. They went from room to room searching and filling up rubbish bags with supplies. Whilst Pamela and martin were busy collecting supplies molly sat on a chair and wrapped her teddy up in a bandage, he had bumped his head and was not feeling well. Jack had seen a gun store further down the street and had thought they could do with a little more protection just in case. He had to smash his way inside as the door was locked but the shutters were up. The owner was probably in the middle of opening up when it hit here. Inside jack grabbed a large bag and filled it with guns and ammo he also took a few knives and some other items he thought might come in useful. When he had finished filling the bag he returned and put the bag into the jeep then went to search for the others. He found them in second floor storage cupboard filling up with bandages and saline. “Hey where did you get to” martin asked when he saw jack. “Just collecting a few items we may need” he replied. They all stood still when they heard a noise from further down the corridor, jack put his finger to his lips signalling to them to be quiet and he snuck down to see what it was. Passing three doors on his left he heard a noise from the next room. He took the gun from his holster and slowly pushed open the door to the private suite, before he could move further into the room he was struck and the gun fell from his hands. He turned and grabbed the woman who had hit him with a drip stand, she struggled but he held her fast. Martin and Pamela had rushed down the corridor to help but molly was told to stay back. Once jack had calmed down his attacker he let her go “we are not here to hurt you ok so I’m going to let you go and we can talk” he told her. The woman with soft brown hair and piercing blue eyes backed away from them. “I thought we were alone” she said out of breath. “We?" jack asked. “Yes, we, there are two babies here” she said and pointed to the cribs in the corner of the room. Jack introduced Pamela and martin and himself and then molly as she popped her head around the door. The woman introduced herself as Doctor Kate Barnet. The babies were new born's and were called Mackenzie and Deklan, they were twin boys. “I am so sorry” Kate said when she saw jack rubbing his arm where he was going to have a bruise. “It's ok I understand you were scared” he replied. They all sat down and Kate began to tell them what had happened to her.
Having worked a full shift and still having another to go doctor Kate Barnet had gone into the
doctor’s lounge for an hours sleep before going back on duty for the early morning shift. When she woke the hospital was disserted no doctors, no patients and no other staff members were to be found. Walking out of the emergency doors into the ambulance bay it was the same the busy road was now still. A few crashed cars and abandoned ambulances but no sign of life. Going back into the hospital she searched room from room floor to floor. On the maternity floor Kate heard crying and went to see, in the nursery amongst all the empty incubators lay two new born baby boy’s. They had their name tags on and were the only other life she could find. Trying to call all of the people she could think of from her family to the police and even just the operator Kate realised they were on their own. She found a private suite and brought the babies there and set up a make shift home. She collected things she would need like baby milk and clothes for them and nappies. Food for herself from the vending machines and the cafeteria, she stored in the cupboard. Her thinking was that if there was anyone alive they would come to the hospital looking for help so she would stay there. The next few days she took care of Mackenzie and Deklan as they were named from their bands. Every day she would go down to the entrance and take a quick look for others but saw none till now. “You didn’t see the red mist?” martin asked. “Red mist no I haven’t seen any” she replied. Jack told her about everything and he could see that she was scared from the look in her eyes. Not really believing that a red mist was the reason for everyone disappearing Kate walked over to the window and gasped when she saw the lingering mist surrounding the city, she brought a hand to her mouth in shock. That’s when she noticed down below and further up the street, moving slowly in and out of the maze of motionless traffic. A big yellow school bus was heading straight for them, the mist behind them but still it kept its distance.
