crimson, chapter two

Pamela Montgomery had loved her husband Robyn; she had sat with him his hand in hers. Smiling and telling him the funny things their six year old twins, Sarah and Sean had done that day. He didn’t respond as usual, the cancer had sent him into a coma weeks before hand. That was the last story Pamela had ever told the love of her life. Four months later she was watching her children playing in the back yard as she stood washing the breakfast dishes. Sean was the spitting image of his father at that age his blonde hair cut long around his face and his big blue eyes full of wonder; he was playing with a football whilst his sister was having a tea party with her dolls and teddies. Her long blond hair tied back in a ponytail was swishing in the breeze. Pamela took her eyes off them for a minute and then heard them calling for her. Looking outside she saw the red mist as it flowed over the fence and across the grass towards her children. She called to them to get in the house but it was too late they had vanished in a sea of red. When the mist parted a few seconds her children were gone. Running out side to find them Pamela called their names but got no reply. Unable to find them in the backyard she ran around the side to the front of the house. After shouting for help the distraught mother realised that it wasn’t just her children that had vanished. At this time on a Saturday morning Mr Chambers a kind old soul would be out tending to his flowers next door, but he was gone. The street of the cul-de-sac should be filled with kids riding their bikes, skipping, playing with their dogs. The street was empty, no humans no animals only the red mist. The mist crept towards her and she retreated back to her front door closing it behind her. She watched as the mist climbed up the porch and crept through the gaps in the door. Standing in the mist filled hall everything went from red to black.
